The White Rose (German: Weiße Rose) was a non‑violent, intellectual resistance group in Nazi Germany, founded in Munich in June 1942. Led by five students – Hans & Sophie Scholl, Willi Graf, Christoph Probst, Alexander Schmorell – and philosophy professor Kurt Huber, they distributed six anonymous leaflets calling for active opposition to the Nazi regime. They denounced the persecution of Jews, the crimes of the state, and urged Germans to resist. On 18 February 1943, Hans and Sophie Scholl were arrested while distributing leaflets at LMU Munich; together with Probst they were executed by guillotine four days later. Other core members were arrested and executed in the months that followed. Their final leaflet was smuggled to the Allies, and millions of copies were airdropped over Germany by the RAF. Today, the White Rose stands as a timeless symbol of moral courage, student activism, and the power of conscience.
“Es lebe die Freiheit!” – Hans Scholl’s last words before execution.
Reminds students and teachers that academic spaces are also moral spaces. The White Rose used knowledge, philosophy and conscience to resist tyranny — a lesson for every classroom.
Prof. Huber stood with his students. This gathering celebrates the bond between faculty and students, and the shared responsibility to speak truth.
Encourages the campus community to move from passive learning to ethical action — to question, to resist injustice, and to uphold human dignity.
Like the White Rose, small groups can create lasting impact. This programme plants the seeds of conscience in our own academic ecosystem.
Builds awareness of empathy, integrity and respect for human dignity — grounding students' academic growth in strong ethical and human values.
“Es lebe die Freiheit!” –
